Data on Dub is excited to announce the following:

Haul Music are incredibly proud to present:

Haul Music LIVE
Featuring Craig McWhinney and Mike Callander.

Haul Music LIVE is a one on one live performance by two of Australia’s best known techno talents that will deconstruct and reconstruct each artist’s tracks alongside a range of new collaborative works.

The Haul Music LIVE set has been prepared using classic techno machinery such as the TR909 through to modern performance tools such as Ableton Live and Maschine. On stage Mike and Craig will each take control of their own live console for an entirely unique realization of their combined sonic potential.

Mike and Craig will officially debut the Haul Music LIVE project at this year’s Stereosonic in Melbourne on Saturday 3rd December.

They’ll also take the show on the road for a limited run of dates across the summer. Contact Sara Giampa at Data On Dub (sara@dataondub.com) to make a booking enquiry.

About Haul:  Three of Australia’s most dynamic electronic musicians came together in 2008 to present the music of their homeland to the rest of the world. Mike Callander, Craig McWhinney and Christian Vance had been local heroes in Melbourne for most of the preceding decade.  Haul Music was launched as a digital label in December 2008, and within a few short months had already licensed tracks to Carl Cox’s Global Underground Compilation and enjoyed an incredible level of support from DJs the world over.  With an emphasis on originality and unique character, and with the spirit of local community at the core of its mission, Haul Music has since presented a consistent musical program that is nothing if not distinct, and that has in every way engaged the talents of Australian natives and residents.?Now, and with similar contributions from other newly formed Melbourne-based organisations, and with the global success of its bright young producers attracting to Melbourne plenty of interest from abroad, the city’s music enthusiasts believe in a bright future.  And, after sixteen truly original digital outings, the Haul Music label has also grown. Haul Music has just released the first in a very limited edition set of vinyl releases.

Search Party featuring Daniel Bell (Detroit/7th City/Accelerate)

Friday October 29th, Mercat Basement, Melbourne

Search Party #4 moves into the underground surrounds of the Mercat Basement. When all the LED’s fade and the mp3′s fall silent, that minuscule pop-up lamp on the turntable will still find the groove. Vintage, raw, real. House and Techno music now has a history spanning more than two decades. Daniel Bell was pretty much there from the beginning. From the early 90′s in Detroit he created a distinct, reduced sound and approach to dance music. It paved the way for minimal. Tracks like “Losing Control” under his alias, DBX, became a benchmark. He collaborated with figures like Moritz von Oswald and Richie Hawtin, he set up labels with the likes of Theo Parrish, Rick Wade and Dopplereffekt. His first officially released mix CD was voted by Resident Advisor at #2 of the decade’s best mixes. The Button Down Mind of Daniel Bell (Tresor 2000) became a cult among the initiated and instilled the idea that through less there was possibly more to the dancefloor.

In 2000, before every DJ and their dog had the same epiphany, Daniel moved to Berlin and truly established himself not only as a world citizen but as an artist pivotal in the development of the future of dance music. He is the perfect fit to continue our search. From deep-rooted electronic music history to his current place at the edge of the uber contemporary Berlin dancefloor – the Search Party welcomes back Daniel Bell to Melbourne for one exclusive show. This guy can DJ.

Support:
Haul Music’s Christian Vance (LIVE), Mike Callander, Craig McWhinney and Claire Morgan.

Tickets:
Early bird Tickets $17+bf (until 3/10) $21+bf thereafter.

Interviews:
Phone or email interviews with any of the Haul Artists are available as well as email interviews with Daniel Bell, please register your interest sara@dataondub.com

Mad Racket’s 12th Birthday featuring Daniel Bell (Detroit/7th City/Accelerate)

“HIGH SCHOOL DAZE”

It’s Mad Racket’s 12th Birthday!! We are finally big enough to start our High School studies, and to celebrate we are bringing a guest we have long wanted to host, techno and house originator Daniel Bell. Few in the techno world can boast a more impressive CV – his first release was co-produced by Richie Hawtin & John Aquaviva and released on their +8 Records in 1990, and was followed by a string of releases which changed the sound of the music we dance to, in particular the tracks “Losing Control” and “Phreak”. Through the 1990’s Daniel moved to Detroit, set up Seventh City Distribution and created the labels Accellerate, 7th City, Harmonie Park (originally with Rick Wade) and Elevate (with a then-unknown producer called Theo Parrish), and assisted with the start-up of Anthony Shakir’s Frictional and Dopplereffekt’s Dataphysics labels. Ahead of the pack as always, Daniel moved to Berlin in 2000, and has played in every corner of the world over the last 20 years.

His unique DJ sets are known for their crafted minimalism and effortless, slow-building energy. His first-ever official mix CD, The Button Down Mind Of Daniel Bell (Tresor, 2000) was voted in at number two of the decade’s best mixes by Resident Advisor.

He is the real deal.

In short, we are really excited about this birthday party!!

Also playing a selection of birthday treats in the Bowlo-riffic Ballroom will be the Racketeers Four: Zootie, Jimmi James, Ken Cloud & Simon Caldwell, celebrating bringing Racket up to High School age. Now for those troublesome teens…

As an extra special birthday present, we include a Locker Lounge Bonanza featuring the Backroom Donks: Sinclair, Jamie Lloyd & Noel Boogie.

Dress-up theme for the night is a celebration of High School Fashions circa Year 7…

Daniel Bell Biography:
Born – Sacramento California in 1967.

After years of being in bands and producing hip hop music, Daniel had a surprise success with his first 12′ released on +8 records while still in film school near Toronto, Canada in 1990. The record was “Technarchy” co-produced by Richie Hawtin and John Aquaviva, and it spurred a move by him to Detroit, Mi. After touring and recording extensively throughout 1991 and 1992, including a 38-date American tour opening for Moby and The Prodigy, Daniel left +8 to start his own company, Accelerate Communications in 1992.

With Accelerate Daniel released a small string of influential releases. He reduced the Detroit techno sound into funky, streamlined grooves. The formula proved to be successful and helped launch a new minimal aesthetic in techno and house music.

With the overwhelming success of his “Losing Control” single (an international underground hit in 1994), Daniel set up Seventh City Distribution. For the next four years he worked to assist smaller Midwest labels to get distribution in overseas markets. He helped finance the start-ups of several labels including Anthony Shakir’s “Frictional” and Dopplereffekt’s “Dataphysix”. He also created three new labels – 7th City, which to this day releases cutting-edge techno music, Elevate (with then unknown house producer Theo Parrish) and Harmonie Park (originally with Rich Wade). Daniel also co-owned “Rotate”, a record store across the river from Detroit in Windsor Canada for two years.

Because of the workload of owning and operating many ventures his music production ceased for a few years. In 2000 he released his first mix c.d. with Tresor Records entitled “The Button Down Mind of Daniel Bell” and in a surprise move relocated to Berlin, Germany. In Berlin he has developed and promoted new talent for his 7th City label and has quietly restarted his recording career with a series of remixes for a diverse range of artists including, John Tejada, Pantytec, Akufen, and Anthony Shakir. In February 2003 he will release his second mix cd “The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back” on the Paris-based label Logistic. In the near future, Daniel will start another new label to release his latest productions.

As well as producing Daniel has also kept a busy dj schedule for the past 8 years. He has played many major venues throughout the world including Liquid Room/Tokyo (3), Lost/London, Rex Club/Paris, Limelight/New York (4), Redno5/Chicago, Nightown/Rotterdam, Nitsa/Barcelona (3), Tresor/Globus (>10), Weetamix/Geneva (2), Yellow/Tokyo, Rockets/Osaka, Staples/San Francisco to name a few. Daniel’s dj gigs have brought him all over the world including every major US, German and Canadian city, Poland, Switzerland, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Italy, England, Scotland, France, Finland, Japan, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, and the Netherlands. He currently has a residency at Robert Johnson in Frankfurt/Offenbach.

MIKE CALLANDER: BIOGRAPHY:
“My favourite Aussie” – DJ T.

“Mike Callander is bound for greatness. So much character, top-notch.” – Deepchild

Mike Callander is one of Australia’s most dynamic DJs, an innovative producer and remixer, and founder (alongside Christian Vance and Craig McWhinney) of the exciting new Australian record label, Haul Music.  Mike’s productions and remixes for his Haul Music imprint have enjoyed incredible feedback and support from a truly diverse range of DJs including Konrad Black, Agoria, Alex Smoke, Len Faki, Brothers Vibe, Deetron, Tim Paris, Hernan Cattaneo, Danny Tenaglia, Alexkid, Nick Warren, Deepchild, Get Abril and Tomcraft.

In addition to his Haul Music output, Mike is currently collaborating with legendary Drum & Bass artist (and producer of Carl Cox’s forthcoming album) Davide Carbone, while at the same time mixing projects for Australian band The Queen’s Head and turntablist DJ Kuya, as well as regular collaborations with Australian favourite and ARIA chart-topper T-Rek.

As a DJ it was at his own techno club, Fokus, in Melbourne in 2001, that Mike achieved instant infamy for his genre-bending musical selections and an approach to DJing that was both versatile and unique. A decade later, Mike has performed and toured alongside just about every techno DJ to visit Australia, while in Melbourne holding long term residencies at a range of sought-after clubbing institutions such as Sunny, Nano, Ffour, and the infamous Honkytonks.

His mix CD for Honkytonks, entitled “The Last Dance” made its way into record stores across the world in 2006. Since then Mike has toured all across Australia and New Zealand, and as far afield as Berlin, Los Angeles, Madrid and Malaysia, playing alongside artists as diverse as Mathew Jonson, Prins Thomas, Michael Mayer, Radioslave, Luciano, Booka Shade, Trentemoeller, Locodice, Matthew Dear, Stacey Pullen, Agoria (at Berlin’s Watergate), M.A.N.D.Y (both in Melbourne and Berlin), and Mr C (in Melbourne and Berlin).

Mike’s DJing has also earned accolades from countless touring international artists, with many labeling him one of Australia’s finest – most notably Get Physical’s DJ T., who invited Mike to play in Berlin at his anniversary event to celebrate 20 years of DJing. Since April 2009 Mike’s favourite Melbourne gig is his residency at Sorry Grandma!, where he plays a 5-hour marathon morning set each Sunday morning to a loyal following. On othernights Mike is also called upon to lend his talents to the decks (and the dancefloors) at events such as Sneakerpeeps and The Likes Of You, as well as Festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Stereosonic, Future Music and Summadayze.

Outside the clubs, Mike has made numerous appearances on radio such as Australia’s national youth radio station Triple J Mix Up (both as a guest and monthly resident DJ), and on Melbourne’s Kiss FM.

Redshape cancels Australian Tour. The show goes on with Haul Music showcase and more homegrown acts.

April 29th, 2010 by data on dub
Respond

Stable, Haul Music and Inthemix.com.au presents…

Redshape cancels Australian Tour.  The show goes on with Haul Music showcase and more homegrown acts.

Due to the Volcano in Europe and air traffic chaos, Redshape has had to postpone his Australian tour till later in the year. Both Redshape and his Australian tour agents went above and beyond the abilities of the common man to make it happen but Berlin airport was jammed and with over 20 hours and 3 days at the airport Redshape decided to pull the pin. The bulk of his tour dates were surrounding Anzac Day and it’s not financially viable for the artist or the promoter to fly here for one event.

People who purchased tickets through moshtix will be issued a full refund and Moshtix will email all their customers directly. We are waiting on info from ITM in regards to refunds but they will send out a press release tonight I’m sure. Concession tickets bought through promoters can be refunded directly at your place of purchase also and the event has been reduced to $15 with door sales only.

We apologize for any inconveniences that have arisen as a result of these cancellations but in this case, it truly was an act of god.

No one is more upset about this than Christian or Myself (or maybe Dean at HaHA) , and we hope you all come down for some homegrown techno this Friday night at Roxanne Parlour.

Anyone who feels they have been more inconvenienced than the next guy, feel free to email me your concerns and we’ll deal with your requests on a case by case basis. kevin@stablemusic.com.au

__________________________

In light of all this, the show must go on and we will showcase some of Australia’s premier electronic artists.

Christian Vance Live (Perspectiv, Haul Music), Mike Buhl Live, Clare Morgan (Sydney), Dave Pham, Craig McWhinney, Matt Radovich, Mike Callander, Mike Buhl, Ace Stojevski and Caine Sinclair.

With experiments in sound by Cloud Speaker Live, JPS, Nam, Spherix( Semi Live performance), Unfettered, Josh Rankine and Richard Cambell in the Front room.

Join us for an all night electronica experience..

Haul Music hails from Melbourne, Australia, the southernmost city in the world to have a population of over one million people.

It is also home to a vibrant, if a little exotic, electronic music scene. And it was with this in mind that Haul’s founders, Christian Vance, Mike Callander and Craig McWhinney decided to share their ideas, their music and a little of that exoticism with the rest of the world. Indeed, it’s a long Haul to travel this far south and not be a little affected. Their label became the vehicle to make that journey more enjoyable and take a few people along for the ride. A trip through their very own backyard, past the Hills hoist and onto the dance floor.

With a swathe of releases from Australian and international producers and remixers that have been supported by everyone from Carl Cox to Carl Craig, it is little wonder that the journey through the clouds has only just begun. In 2010 Haul Music is set for an abundance of new artists, new music and some crazy parties.

Craig McWhinney – Penance EP

April 15th, 2010 by data on dub
Respond

We couldn’t be more excited every time a new Haul Release comes out.   Their latest EP from Craig is killer and is very deserving of all the props! Check it:)

Haul Music Release:

Craig McWhinney – Penance EP

https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/release/detail/233497/Penance

Craig McWhinney finds himself at the crossroads. Like Icarus, who flew too close to the sun in an escape attempt from the Island of Crete, Craig too must be careful not to let the wax melt from his techno wings as he makes his escape from the cultural obscurity of the Melbourne Techno Scene.

After lapping up the significant praise that came with the inclusion of his “Soft & Warm” Remix of Christian Vance’s “Chase The Night” (HAUL004) on Carl Cox’s Global Underground CD, and a subsequent spot in the top 30 on Beatport’s Techno Charts, Craig has enjoyed for the first time the kind of attention usually reserved for beautiful celebrities.

But he must work harder than ever now to resist these unwelcome distractions. Craig’s next step must be calculated and direct… for the vultures await his fall from grace. If he flies too close to the sun, his local peers will think he’s a wanker. That’s the Australian Way. Tall Poppy Syndrome (look it up, people!) can be a bitch in the Sunburnt Country.

However, if he over-compensates for this phenomenon, and sticks too close to the proverbial sea (in other words not reaching the lofty heights he deserves because he’s a pussy), then his label mates Mike and Christian will think he is, well, a wanker.

In other words, he’s screwed either way. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t eh, Craig?

As such, this next EP “Penance” feels like some kind of apology. Is Craig already asking for forgiveness? And from whom?

This time his confessions were heard first by Pinksilver’s dynamic duo Forty6&Two and an exciting new talent, Melbourne’s Andy Hart.

Now is the time for your judgement.
